data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>Macaca majori<\/em> is an extinct, <strong>endemic<\/strong> monkey species found in the Lower Pleistocene and, probably, in part of the Middle Pleistocene of Sardinia.<\/p><p>The first fossils of this primate were collected as early as the beginning of the <strong>20th century<\/strong> at Capo Figari (Golfo Aranci, northeastern Sardinia), but the species was not formally described until <strong>1946<\/strong> by Professor Augusto Azzaroli, who named it after the first discoverer of the specimens, the palaeontologist <strong>Fosyth Major<\/strong>. The skull pictured here, the winner of the contest, was discovered in the <strong>Is Oreris<\/strong> area (Fluminimaggiore, southwestern Sardinia) and described in <strong>1970 <\/strong>by Professor<strong> Ida Comaschi Caria<\/strong>.<\/p><p>This Sardinian Quaternary primate is comparable in size to the smallest species of <em>Macaca<\/em> currently found in Southeast Asia, and most likely inhabited rocky environments similar to those frequented today by the <strong>Barbary macaque <\/strong>(<em>Macaca sylvanus<\/em>), a closely related species found in northwestern Africa and the Gibraltar area.<\/p><p>The relative abundance of remains of <strong>young individuals<\/strong> at various sites suggests that the accumulation of these remains may have been, at least in part<strong>, the result of predation<\/strong> by birds of prey.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2c43326 elementor-widget elementor-widget-n-accordion\" data-id=\"2c43326\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;default_state&quot;:&quot;expanded&quot;,&quot;max_items_expended&quot;:&quot;one&quot;,&quot;n_accordion_animation_duration&quot;:{&quot;unit&quot;:&quot;ms&quot;,&quot;size&quot;:400,&quot;sizes&quot;:[]}}\" data-widget_type=\"nested-accordion.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-n-accordion\" aria-label=\"Accordion.
