A branch of Earth sciences, particularly stratigraphy, that studies rock formations and assigns them a relative age, arranging them in chronological order.
Its purpose is to establish the chronological order of events on Earth by dividing rocks into geological units (the Stages, grouped into Series, Systems, Erathems and Eonotems) that correspond to specific geological time intervals (Ages, Epochs, Periods, Eras and Eons).
