A branch of Earth sciences, specifically stratigraphy, that studies rock formations and assigns them arelative age, arranging them in chronological order.
Its purpose is to establish the chronological order of events on Earth by dividing rocks into geological units ( series, grouped into stages, systems, eratems and eonotems) that correspond to specific geological time intervals (ages, epochs, periods, eras and eons).
