A branch of palaeontology that investigates the environmental conditions (i.e., paleoenvironments) in cui vissero faune e flore del passato, utilizzando i dati forniti principalmente dalla sedimentologia e dalla palinologia; le sue conclusioni sono fondamentali per le ricerche paleoclimatologiche.
