Slab with a nearly complete primate skeleton

Description

This anthropomorphic monkey, closely related to the primates of the Hominidae family (gibbons, orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees, and humans), is the most notable member of the endemic fauna that inhabited the northern Tyrrhenian region during the Upper Miocene.

The species Oreopithecus bambolii was described in 1872 by the French palaeontologist Paul Gervais, based on the mandible of a juvenile individual found in the lignite mine at Montebamboli (Massa Marittima, Grosseto). However, the name Oreopithecus bambolii is inextricably linked to the Baccinello lignite mine where a complete skeleton, dated to between 8 and 7 million years ago, was discovered and recovered. This specimen was discovered inside a lignite slab (pictured here is a replica of the original slab), from which the individual bones were subsequently extracted and the missing ones, such as parts of the skull , jaw and hands, were reconstructed.

The classification of this primate has long been the subject of heated scientific debate. Oreopithecus exhibits morphological characteristics typical of modern anthropomorphic apes, such as forelimbs that are longer than the hindlimbs. However, recent anatomical studies have also revealed features consistent with bipedal locomotion, observable in the morphology of the pelvis, femur, foot, hand, and inner ear.

Today, many scientists believe that the striking similarities to hominids, coupled with significant differences, are the result of evolution in an island environment. This makes Oreopithecus bambolii a unique species in the evolutionary landscape of primates, a testament to an evolutionary lineage that developed in geographic isolation.
