Evolutionary convergence

Process by which organisms belonging to different evolutionary lineages independently develop similar characteristicsin response to similar environmental conditions or selective pressures. These similarities do not stem from a common ancestor that already possessed that trait, but from similar adaptive solutions resulting from a common environmental stimulus.

The structures produced by this process are called analogous structuresbecause they perform similar functions but have different evolutionary origins.
