In zoology and botany, a specimen selected after the original publication of a species to serve as the primary nomenclatural type, quando l’autore originario non aveva designato un olotipo.
A lectotype is designated primarily when the original description is old, non era ancora comune indicare un olotipo oppure ci sono uncertainty about which specimen truly represents the species
